SECTION EARTH

This is another song that we wrote more than 15 years ago. A few months ago we discovered it again when we scanned through our old demos folder and decided it might be the time to finish it up. It’s funny how some songs end up the way they do. We usually don’t start writing a song with the intention to write a song about topic XY. Usually there is a tiny idea that pops up and if it sticks with us we try to make a complete song out of it. Lyrics come last 99% of the time. And even then it is not about “what is this song supposed to be about” but Maria picks up on some of the pseudo-lyrics / placeholder fragments she was singing while developing the arrangement – just because they sound good or they somehow speak to her. And then she comes up with lyrics that fit those fragments.

This is the point where we get an idea of what the song might be about: in this case a society repeatedly pushed from fragile stability into collective darkness and blindness where a cycle of freefall becomes the new normal. And out of curiosity we often ask AI to interpret the lyrics and almost always it blows our minds that we receive a depth-psychological analysis dealing with very personal topics we are currently working on in our own lives. That is the point when suddenly the whole song starts making sense.

Section Earth turns out to be about a state called learned helplessness, which describes the condition in which a person, after repeated uncontrollable negative experiences, stops taking active action – even when change would later still be possible. Much darker than we expected the song to be – but still it fits the noisy, repetitive/hypnotic character of the production with its almost buried vocals. We think it still carries some hope and that it finds its way to people in a similar position who can resonate.

By the way, the short drum solo in the middle of the song is strongly influenced by Joe Morello’s solo on Take Five – but I guess that’s obvious for everyone who knows this track.
