For me, the song isn’t really about a straightforward love story. Sophie is more like an emotional and spiritual presence than just a real person. I wrote her almost entirely through symbols, like a rainbow, a phoenix, a diamond, because I wanted her to feel larger than reality, almost like a projection, a muse, or a feeling you can never fully hold onto.
What interests me most in the lyrics is the connection between emotional truth and melancholy:
“Sophie made me so true / Sophie made me so blue.”
To me, that means that certain people can open something inside of you they make you more honest with yourself, more emotionally alive, but also more vulnerable. The song lives in that space between longing, imagination, memory, and reality.
The line “She would never ever love you too” is important because it suddenly breaks the dreamlike atmosphere. It introduces the idea that this connection may never fully exist in reality, even though emotionally it feels completely real and transformative.
Overall, I see the song as being about idealization, longing, and the spiritual impact someone can leave on your inner world, even if they remain unreachable.
Lyrics:
Sophie, may you help me
Think of me as the only one to lose
Sophie, did you read me
All the lines we shared could be true with you
Sophie made me so true
Sophie made me so blue
Sophie made me love you
Sophie took me through
Sophie is a beauty
Drinking fuzzy champagne, oh très bien
Sophie is a rainbow
Burning like a phoenix deep in your chest
Sophie made me so true
Sophie made me so blue
Sophie made me love you
Sophie took me through
Sophie is a diamond
Waving with her kindness through the lines
Sophie, you should kiss them, listen
She would never ever love you too
Sophie made you love me
Sophie made you love me
Sophie made me love
Sophie, do you love me?
